Match Report – North Midlands vs Northumberland Bill Beaumont County Final (Twickenham)
What a day!
It began positively, with all players and officials accounted for as the squad set off for a Sunday outing to Twickenham. Spirits were high as the team boarded the coach, full of good humour and anticipation for the match ahead.
However, halfway there—at the junction of the M40 and M25—a vehicle fire caused a 40-minute delay. Upon arrival at Twickenham, preparations became rushed, with limited time for photographs and pre-match setup.
At 3pm, the team took to the field—showing no signs of any “bus legs.”
An early penalty was awarded, and Jacob Fewtrell opened the scoring. Northumberland responded quickly, capitalising on a lapse in concentration to score a converted try and take a 7–3 lead.
Campaign top try-scorer Mauro Miller—who had notched eight tries in three matches prior—continued his fine form, crossing the line with Fewtrell adding the conversion. Another penalty from Fewtrell pushed the North Midlands ahead 13–7.
Momentum continued to build when John Tuia crossed for a try, again converted by Fewtrell, and it appeared North Midlands were firmly in control. But just before halftime, Northumberland struck back with two quick, converted tries to take a narrow 21–20 lead into the break.
The second half burst into life with a slick backs move, allowing Sam Grimshaw to power over the line. Fewtrell converted and later added a penalty to stretch the lead to 30–21.
With 10 minutes remaining, Northumberland fought back with another converted try, narrowing the score to 30–28. What followed was a tense final period that seemed to last an eternity, with North Midlands defending resolutely.
At the final whistle, relief and joy erupted as players, officials, and supporters celebrated a hard-fought and entertaining victory.
Jacob Fewtrell, with an impeccable kicking display, was deservedly named North Midlands Player of the Match.
