All at North Midlands RFU are saddened by the death of Roy Saunders from Worcester RFC.
Roy was at the heart of Worcester RFC for many years, he came to the Club in the mid 1990’s as a supporter and organised the travel arrangements to away games prior to formation of the Gold n’ Blues. He was an integral part of the formation and growth of the Worcester Wanderers, he was the Fixture Secretary and Referee Contact, he and his wife Chris were tireless in their efforts for the Club, working in the kitchen on match days, running the takeaway hatch on Weston playing fields serving supporters, Mini Juniors & their supporters hot pies, tea & coffee with a smile, cleaning the changing room facilities on Mondays and undertaking maintenance and decoration of the changing rooms during the off season.
Always the first to the Club on match days, opening up the changing rooms, ensuring everything was in place for the games then, helping to sell match day programmes, assisted ably by his grandson, if necessary.
After the game he ensured the referee was looked after with a drink and a meal. Roy used the profits from the takeaway hatch to buy new match balls for the Club each season.
Roy and Chris would also, from time to time, attend away fixtures for the Wanderers in all weathers & conditions. Roy was simply a gentleman and selfless, he loved the game of Rugby, the post-match analysis over a beer and Worcester RFC aka the Wanderers.
He will be very sorely missed by everyone at the Worcester RFC. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Chris & daughter’s Dawn, Marie and the rest of family at this sad time.
