17th April 2024 – GB V W&H
Match report from W&H
After 10 minutes, quick thinking by #10 Ned Collins to take a quick tap penalty on the GB 5 metre line to link with Rory Blyth #8 to power over on the left hand side. Try converted by #10
A second try 10 minutes later, almost an exact copy of the first, GB caught napping after conceding another penalty at close quarters and a quick tap penalty from Ned Collins #10 to this time set up Tom Roberts #4 to make it to the line. This time the conversion fell short.
With just a few minutes left to go in the half, solid defence work back in the W&H half from the forwards eventually releases Archie Clarke #14 down the left wing at speed. Supported by Jem Horton #12, the offload is good and Jem carries across the line and round under the posts for an easy conversion for Nes Collins #10
Leading 19-0 heading towards the half way, a failure to deal with the restart from the W&H try puts pressure on the W&H defence from the kick, conceding a penalty that GB tap into the corner for a successful 5m catch and drive off the subsequent line out. Well converted by their #12 from the 5 metre line and that’s the half.
A frustrating drop in tempo, decision-making and discipline after the half time break allows GB to play themselves back into the game with strong back line work to score two tries in quick succession.
A successful penalty shot taken by #10 Ned Collins edges W&H ahead at 19-22 as the teams go into the last quarter.
Tense exchanges around midfield with both sides tackling hard but tiring quickly, GB make the breakthrough and score a try in the corner. The conversion bouncing off the uprights leaves GB tantalisingly only 2 points ahead, but despite huge pressure from the W&H forwards deep in the GB half with some huge winning scrums, the last passes never quite make it to hand as W&H push just too hard to make what would be winning points. GB maintain their discipline knowing a penalty kick could overturn their lead and hold on for a well-earned win in a game of swinging fortunes.
