Targeting all Shropshire Clubs
What is the Global Pass : It is a joint venture between the RFU and Rugby School to commemorate the Bicentennial of the game of rugby football in which William Webb Ellis, “with a fine disregard for the rules, first picked up the ball and ran…..”. Some 200 specially designed Gilbert balls will be passed around different parts of the world to represent the global pass.
Where and When: – Shropshire’s contribution to the Global Pass: Friday 17th February at 11:00 at Shrewsbury Castle
The Plan: -, is to line out along the ramparts or, if impractical, along the mounds with the walls in background and to pass the anniversary Gilbert ball from right to left within 40 seconds. The completed clip is then sent to Rugby School to be assembled into a film (or films) along with 199 other clips to give the impression of a continuous global ‘loop’. The clips will then of course be shown in all the countries of the world thus bringing undying fame and limitless riches to all who participated.
What to wear: – Please try to dress in Rugby kit – the more dated the better. (Caps (even top hats), waistcoats, breeches or long shorts and striped shirts idea.
A few misc. points:
- The balls are being sent out next week so Shropshire’s should be here in plenty of time.
- There should be plenty of media interest so please try to look cheerful.
Finally thanksl to Sean McCarthy of Shropshire Council who has organised the filming as well as clearing the event. Also to Richard Gough (himself a former player) who is curator of the military museum in the Castle and who, as well as passing, will also be keeping an eye on the stage management.
