County Under-20s edged out

22/02/14   by Paul Bolton

North Midlands’ hopes of reaching the quarter-finals of the National Under-20 Championship suffered another setback with a 15-5 defeat by East Midlands at Bedford Athletic’s Putnue Wood ground today.North Midlands now need Notts, Lincs & Derbyshire to beat Eastern Counties at Newark tomorrow if they are to have any hope of making the knockout stages.

NLD were trounced by East Midlands in their opening match while North Midlands were beaten by Eastern Counties.

North Midlands were hindered against East Midlands by injuries to four of the five specialist front row forwards in their squad within the opening 25 minutes which meant that uncontested scrums were awarded for the final 55 minutes.

East Midlands led 8-0 at that stage but North Midlands defended bravely and reduced the deficit to three points when Worcester University win Reece Chapman-Cary crossed for an unconverted try eight minutes from time.

East Midlands eventually sealed the win that kept them on course for the quarter-finals when tighthead prop Callum Miller crossed for a late try which fly-half Ben Penfold improved.
