City centre rugby a success

They competed in a touch rugby tournament – a popular and fun non-contact version of the sport – on an artificial pitch set up in Victoria Square outside of Birmingham’s Council House and Town Hall.

The event proved so successful that organisers aim to arrange another touch rugby tournament in the summer in response to the interest shown.

“During the day we had 200 people taking part from the business teams as well as a lot of interest from those walking past the event,” said Chris Sigsworth, the RFU Rugby Development Officer for Birmingham.

“The feedback from the teams taking part was excellent, with many stating it was the best event in terms of sport and organisation that had been part of the games.

“During the day there was a lot of interest in teams wishing to play more regular touch activity and we signposted a lot to local O2 Touch Centres and clubs.

“We hope to try to capitalise on the success of this by organising a follow up in the summer, opening up the event to other business and we are already planning for next year as part of Rugby World Cup initiatives.”
